How much DAO is in beef kidney?
DAO or Histamine Degrading Units (HDU) is a pointless measure in food. The only way to determine the true impact of DAO supplements, such as beef kidney extract, on an individual is to test for DAO activity in serum before and within 30 minutes after taking the capsules, allowing for the evaluation of DAO activation in the intestines and absorption into the blood. The higher the increase in the DAO in serum after taking a supplement, the better. Serum test is measured by the change in HDU/ml per mg of supplement.
Some porcine histamine supplements utilize pork kidney and claim to contain 4.2mg DAO or an equivalent of 10,000 histamine-degrading units (HDU) per capsule. This is nonsense.
Without the scientific measure in blood serum, the only practical test is how a person taking the supplement feels and reacts after taking the supplement and consuming histamine-rich foods or drinks.
Unfortunately, not all beef kidney supplements are going to be the same quality. DAO is heat-sensitive, and most companies pay other companies to freeze-dry beef kidneys, so they have no idea of the highest drying temperature reached.
Active DAO in beef kidney is important, as are the combined vitamins and cofactors that work in synergy. These vitamins include B6, B12, Zinc, copper, and iron, all of which are highly bioavailable in beef kidney.
Most DAO supplements also have unnecessary additives like acetic acid, sucrose, glycerol, shellac, and magnesium silicate. This Beef Kidney, like all NXGEN Wholefoods products, is free of additives and fillers.
Each four capsule serving contains approximately 56 mcg of selenium.
